Wonder & Creativity in Iceland.
2024 Photographic Workshop with Michael Tittel
South and East Coast of Iceland
June/July 2024 Dates TBD
Have you ever thought about exploring Iceland with a camera? I am excited to offer a limited private workshop to one of the most visually stunning places on the planet with a curriculum and schedule that is designed to be the photographic experience of a lifetime. In this 7 day workshop you will experience the wonders of the Highlands, South and East Coast. You will learn and receive valuable photographic instruction and critiques that pushes your creativity and photography to new heights. This workshop is open to landscape photographers, or anyone that is interested in photographing breathtaking natural environments and telling stories about places. There will be opportunities for portraiture as well. Those who apply do not have to be professionals but the week will be about being immersed in the image-making process. The only requirement is you should have an interest and passion in creative pursuits and or photography and the drive to work pretty hard during our week.
Who is this workshop for?
The workshop is created for those who want to create original, personal and unique imagery. I’ve designed this workshop for people that seek to use photography as a way to understand, reflect and communicate something bigger to the world. Any experience level of photography is suitable.
Where will I go and what will I see?
Despite its size (no bigger than the state of Ohio) Iceland is quite exhausting to traverse not the least of which is because every few miles is like wandering into a new National Park. You tend to spend more time photographing than you do driving. For that reason our trip is focusing on the South and the South East Coast. The trip is designed to put you in the middle of a wide variety of distinctly different terrains. We’ll see some very well known sites that are amazing and locations many never see. By sticking to these two distinct regions we’ll maximize variety and our time to focus and enjoy the experience.
Why the summer?
Summer is a fantastic time to visit Iceland. It is usually mild weather-wise (Icelandic weather is dramatic and far from mild of course), and it has the advantage of the midnight sun which which dramatically extends the time we get to photograph and creates incredibly long stretches of “golden hour” lighting. In short it’s a photographer’s dream. It’s a bit more crowded on the south coast in the summer but frankly nothing like the crowds you’d experience in National Parks of America, as an example.
How physical will the workshop be?
Iceland is wonderfully undeveloped. Although we will be staying in nice hotels with modern conveniences in the evenings, our days will be spent out in the elements rain or shine. Plan on mild hiking daily (1-3km), going a few hours without meals (we will each pack snacks and small meals throughout our week to carry us in between breakfast and dinner). you will also need to carry water and camera gear. All of our destinations we’ll be driven to and many of the areas we’ll be photographing are easily accessible by our vehicle. It is by no means a rigorous camping experience but you should expect to be fairly tired by the end of the day. Moderate physical excursion is expected and we will not be able to accommodate wheelchairs during the workshop.
What will I learn?
A full curriculum is planned that will span two key areas of learning. Technical
Camera and post processing technology, how to manage dynamic range, analog and digital image making, composition, time-based effects etc.
Conceptual
Discovering why you photograph, concept to executional workflows, relevant history of landscape art, developing personal creative action plans etc.
